Carmal and Louisa arrive at Kelemvor's Temple without incident. Its tower protrudes from the roof of a blackened church-building like the bare trunk of a mighty tree grown through the timbers and turned to stone there over millennia, a self-imposing column for the security of Ravens Bluff to rest upon. It glints faintly even in the broken bits of moonlight that make it through heavy curls of cloud; polished obsidian bricks bear only that caustic light, swallowing all the rest. Acres of graveyard make the church a patchy skirt, and among its speckles of headstones not one zombie can be found, though just beyond the low wall that separates the cemetery from a city square on one side and wide streets on the others, hundreds mill, apparently without aim, but never onto the churchgrounds. The beholder may have managed merely to reduce the city's defenses, rather than to suppress them entirely.

Carmal and Louisa arrive at Kelemvor's Temple without incident. Its tower protrudes from the roof of a blackened church-building like the petrified trunk of an ancient tree, returning only the few, fragmented moonbeams that force their way through the clouds. Acres of graveyard are a patchy skirt around the structure, and among the speckles of headstones the party members notice a lack of zombies that is conspicuous in juxtaposition with the city just beyond the cemetery walls, where hundreds of undead wander about. The beholder may have merely supressed the city's defenses, rather than disabled them entirely.

Carmal surveys a storm battery of sweeping shingles for somewhere he can land. He sets himself down in the seam of a turret where it meets a rising sweep, and he braces himself against it as he finds his feet. The bard means to take a peak inside following careful ingression of a conveniently placed loophole. Louisa flies out across the cemetery in search of the temple's guardians. Every couple dozen rows of headstones comes a row of shade trees, their swaths of foliage offering innumerable opportunities for a hesitant guardian to hide from the llama's view.

Carmal surveys a sweeping shingle-scape for somewhere to land. He sets himself down in the seam of a turret where it meets a rising arc, and braces himself against it as he finds his feet. The bard means to take a peak inside following careful ingression of a conveniently placed loophole. Louisa flies out across the cemetery in search of the temple's guardians. Every couple dozen rows of headstones comes a row of shade trees— swaths of foliage offering frustratingly many opportunities for a hesitant guardian to hide from the llama's view. As she goes, Carmal makes his way inside: over the sill of a little window and onto a wide ledge from the inward edge of which he takes in a view of the tower's whole interior. At the edge of the floor, the tower's center opens into a cavernous space that extends upward into darkness, two dozen more floors at least, punctuated every ten or so feet by annular platforms identical to the one Carmal is on. There's no telling how far up it extends— certainly well beyond the apparent exterior limits of the building; maybe forever. Turning his gaze downward with that unsettling thought in mind, he takes in the ground-level, visible just three floors below.
