Umbral Gaze 8: The Deathkiss
At the beginning, in the afternoon after arriving back in Waterdeep, Almuth finds the unblinking patrol to rat on Gottlob for the joke he played (impersonating Eldath). Met by a drunk dwarf, Hogar, temporary leader while the leader is away, who gives him a letter to deliver. Presumeably this guy is more competent when not wasted.
An hour later, after dinner, Gottlob shows up just to see how things are going. Meets another guy there called Arukil who lets him know the leader is away right now. Hogar mentions the cleric and gottlob guesses it's almuth.
Back at laeral's manor, the zanathar shows up via his floating orb thing from before. (check ug 1 for consitency) He's interested in this one. We are tasked with recovering bodies of a research party (4) and small search and rescure party sent when the first didn't return (1 dead, one returned). Total of 5.
Party goes by wagon. It takes a day and a half. Almuth gives Gottlob the letter, but he tears it in half and pockets it. Later, when nobody is looking, he reads it: nothing but a bunch of insults. Clearly Hogar was drunk. That night as the party prepares to rest, G throws the letter back at A. They argue, but ultimately G decides to forgive Almuth--- he didn't mean to offend the cleric--- though he'll never trust him quite as well as before.
Reaching a camp with waterdeep sigil and tents, G sees a shadowy talon reaching from the ground toward Almuth, but it dissapears. He mentions it, unsure if he's crazy. Maybe the place is cursed...
There are some books in the tent, and one that looks important. With mending and prestidigitation, they restore it to readability.
book- journal, really- shows that the party sent before also saw these talons before they were killed. This place is creepy... red wizards...

In Lantan's city streets, Glass golems mingle with metal automata; the party locates their merchant friend again. The walk back from the Sky Forge afforded ample time to consider what favorable version of the day's events Laeral might most readily believe, and they ask of the gnome a simple favor: to write a document, an official looking letter on behalf of all Lantanese, to thank the party and their Waterdhavian patron for eliminating the beholder threat. Our heroes will present Lord Silverhand this document as proof of the story that Rwntincer perished in a lava flow during their furious battle atop a shield volcano. As they make the journey home, over mist-bound waters to the grandeur of Laeral's war-room, Clementine and Gottlob play the scenario over in their heads; they owe more to the Open Lord than the rest, and the deception they plan to carry out tugs at their consciences, but they know there can be no going back now. They committed to remove a threat, and remove the threat they shall, but in their own way, with Tasha's backing and their party at their side.
